ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE

Something I have been working on for many years (yes, years!) is trying to get myself organized - physically AND mentally. I am still not there yet! I have come to realize that organizing one's life is an on-going process and will never actually be finished.

Throwing things out can be relatively easy once you have the mindset to just DO it. The physical things I have been working on are: donating clothes that no longer fit or I just don't wear anymore, recycling old papers and magazines, organizing closets and drawers (isn't it great knowing where things are?), and finishing craft and sewing projects that have been sitting around since my college days - that's a long time, folks! (Note: If I don't have time or no longer have the interest in the project, then I either declare it done just the way it is or I toss it or give it away!)

Getting the house ready to sell has been interesting too. I have found that I really LOVE not having photos and other things sitting around that collect dust. When I move into my own place, I wonder how much I will unpack and how much I will just leave in boxes!

Reducing mind clutter takes more diligence. And this is partly what I will start blogging about tomorrow on www.SearchHolistic.com, under Stories and Blogs. I hope you will follow me there.

For those who need some help with physical clutter, here is some good advice from local professional organizer, Christen Fackler of iOrganize (www.iorganizeeverything.com):

  • Remove the clutter but keep what you love.
  • Realize that items you keep represent your past, present and future -- focus mostly on the future.
  • Incorporate the dish theory: when the sink is clean, no one wants to be the first to put a dirty dish into it. But once the sink is full of dirty dishes, no one hesitates. Think twice before not filing that document the right way or piling up papers.
  • take a picture of your space to really see it.
  • Include a "flex area" for temporary or seasonal items.
  • Define structure for your spaces.
  • Create rules. For example; if you but a new shirt, another must go. Or when a drawer is full, it must be sorted.
