WORKS IN WOOD
New Hope Arts’ annual Works In Wood exhibition
draws on Bucks County’s rich tradition of fine
woodworking established by George Nakashima. The exhibition
highlights the contemporary artists who live and work
in the region today. As a national exhibition, the
show attracted submissions from as far away as Michigan
and California as well as artists from throughout the
east coast. Noted Bucks County woodworkers such as
Mira NakashimaYarnall, Phillip L.Powell, Robert Whitley,
Mark Sfirri, Jeffrey Greene and others will participate.
The exhibition features sculpture, artist designed
furniture, and wood turnings by 37 nationally and internationally
recognized woodworkers who have received major fellowships
and awards recognizing their excellence in design.
Works by the artists included in the exhibition have
been seen in numerous books and in national and regional
publications such as Fine Woodworking Design Book,
Woodwork Magazine, Custom Woodworking Magazine, Woodworker
Magazine, Wood Shop News, American Style Magazine and
American Craft Magazine among many others. Their works
are featured in public and private collections and
have been exhibited by museums such as museums such
as the Smithsonian, Michener Art Museum and the Philadelphia
Museum of Art and fine galleries around the world.
All works in the exhibition are for sale and most
of the exhibitors accept commission work.
Overall the show resonates with a sense of warmth,
a richness of textural surfaces and exemplifies how
one material can inspire artists to create uniquely
different objects. The show includes free form edge
furniture that is often heavily burled as well as tightly
controlled architecturally inspired geometric forms.
Materials range from found objects to tree limbs or
a variety of exotic hardwoods such as African wenge,
purpleheart, cocabola, and others.
Works in Wood opens at the New Hope Arts Center, 2
Stockton Avenue, corner of Stockton and Bridge Street
in New Hope, PA with a Patrons Preview on Saturday,
November 17, 2007 from 7:00-9:00pm. Admission is $15
per person and includes wine and food. The artist will
attend.
The exhibition will continue through January 12 with
no admission fee and is open Thursday through Sunday
from 12noon until 5pm, Saturday evenings until 8:00pm
or by appointment.
