Into the WoodsInto the Woods - from the New Hope Solebury High School Theater Club

Have you ever wondered what happens following “happily ever after?” Discover the answer when New Hope-Solebury High School’s theater club Mask & Zany presents Into the Woods on March 19, 20 and 21 at Stephen J. Buck Theater. The Tony Award winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine takes a fresh look at classic fairy tales such as Cinderella, Jack and The Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood , and Rapunzel, intertwined in the tale of The Baker and his Wife, who desperately seek to unlock a Witch’s curse which has left them childless. The outcome is a mirthful series of events in which the vexed couple must find “a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold.”

Into the Woods features an outstanding cast lead by Aaron Sauter and Joslyn Kelly as The Baker and his Wife, London Clark and Connor Schwantes as Cinderella and Her Prince, Katie Cosner as Little Red Riding Hood, Mae Fairfield and Ari Oppenheim as Rapunzel and Her Prince, and Christian Johnson and Gabrielle Crimi as Jack and his Mother. The talented ensemble also includes brilliant performances by Brielle Appleton as The Witch, Emily Chukusky as Cinderella’s Step Mother and Cory McMillen, Mackenzie Rae, Libby Lucy and Alex Koblan as The Step Sisters. The supporting cast of more than 50 students raise the level of performance to new heights as they vocalize magnificent harmonies and dance magically around the enchanted sets.

Directed by Melanie Pittner, Into the Woods features inanimate objects which come to life onstage and characters who interact with the audience. Music Director Tom Bateman takes the gifted cast into the stratosphere with incredible vocal performances in numbers such as “Children Will Listen,” “On The Steps Of The Palace” and “No One Is Alone.” The hilarious “Hello, Little Girl,” performed by Katie Cosner and Conner Schwantes, is sure to leave audiences in fits of laughter. The pit orchestra is directed by Band Master Dave Bachart, whose students do an outstanding job playing the intricate score for this production. With choreography by Jordan Brennan, the seasoned company of Mask & Zany veterans sing and dance their way through the Woods on their journey toward true happiness.

The production runs Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Stephen J. Buck Theater, on the campus of New Hope-Solebury High School. Curtain time is 7:30 PM with an additional children’s matinee performance of Act One only on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 PM. The actors will come out after the matinee performance in costume to greet the children in the audience.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by e-mailing mpittner@nhsd.org or at the door. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, with a $2 discount for reserving in advance. Tickets for the children’s matinee are $5 for adults and $3 for children, with no advance discount available.
