John Murdoch
Local artist John Murdoch recently created Gold Light Studios, a hub for artists who want to hone their skills in classical, realistic drawing and painting. Located in Bedminster, it’s less than half an hour from New Hope, Lambertville, and Doylestown, and the only school of its kind between Philadelphia and New York. Students flock here from as far away as Princeton and Allentown.
“When I arrived in the area over 10 years ago I was looking for the a place to learn and gather with like minds who wanted to do classical art. Since I couldn’t find that spot, I’ve created it: a center where artists can come and practice their craft, pool their energies, draw from long poses with the model and come up with solutions together,” says founder John Murdoch.
Murdoch is well-known in the area as a painter and teacher. His artistic lineage, developed at ateliers across the country, traces back to the Empire-era classicists Ingres and David. His own work is lush and sensual, recently featuring portraiture and angels.
Atelier training
Gold Light Studios offers a full-time Atelier program that uses the old-school, rigorous, step-by step-approach that builds skills from the bottom up.
Life drawing
Gold Light offers open Life Drawing sessions of 3 hours each, 4 times weekly. A calendar is available on the website. All artists are welcome. No reservation is needed.
Lectures, events and programs
Week-long and weekend intensive programs in painting are offered as well. Lectures offered to the Atelier students are also open to drop-ins.
