The Arts 2004

Liam Quirk
by Marilyn Bullock

“ The book is an extension of my life and work in the world.” So says Liam Quirk of his newly released book, The Art of Emotional Wisdom. In his book, Liam talks about how “emotion has a logic and sense to it.” He recommends that we look within because that is where we will find our true power. “When we deny our divinity and creativity, we fall into fear.”

Liam was born in Colorado Springs and then followed his family around the country, living in such diverse places as Alabama and Seattle. He studied creative writing at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and in 1980 went to study in England as part of an undergraduate program. It was while he was in England that he discovered Zen meditation. (As a teen he had read a book entitled “Handbook to Higher Consciousness,” so he had actually been meditating regularly since then.) While walking through a deserted part of the university library, a book on Zen meditation literally fell off the shelf in front of him. He took it home and read it that evening, and his life changed dramatically from that point forward.

After studying in England, Liam taught English in Hamburg, Germany. Upon his return to the States, Liam earned his Masters Degree in English at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then received a Fulbright Assistant Teaching Scholarship and so returned to Germany, this time to Nuremberg. After that, he moved back to the States, where he taught German, French and English in Seattle and Boston (in addition to English, he is fluent in French, and German, and also studied Russian for 6 years). He also started getting involved in music, writing songs, learning how to play the guitar and sing.

Liam’s father was in the aerospace industry – he ran the computer simulation for the Apollo moon project. After a career with Boeing, Liam’s father moved the family to Buckingham in the 70s, and his father retired not long after. The legacy of his father’s work on the early computers lives on through his children, most of whom are involved in some way with the computer industry. For Liam, the gift from his father is found in his belief that working together we can use science wisely to expand our horizons and do what might be considered impossible.

Over the years, in addition to his academic pursuits, Liam has studied: massage, shiatsu, polarity, flower essences, aromatherapy, yoga, nutrition, energy medicine, emotional transformational therapy, somatic therapy and more. He is now in the process of opening his Doylestown office to offer ETT™, Emotional Transformational Therapy™.

Emotional Transformation Therapy™ is a leading-edge form of brief psychotherapy that uses powerful techniques of visual brain stimulation to access new levels of depth and rapid therapeutic change. Developed in the 1990s by clinical psychologist Steven R. Vazquez, Ph.D., ETT™ uses the latest in brain science and powerful techniques of visual stimulation to effect therapeutic change quickly, gracefully, and without drugs. Proactively, ETT™ may facilitate personal growth and emotional well being.

The Art of Emotional Wisdom is a compilation of Liam’s personal insights into spirituality and personal growth. It is a conceptual handbook with a series of experiential exercises designed to reinforce understanding. His goal is that his book will help people tune into ways of understanding their own personal growth and creative expression. It is available on Amazon, as well as in bookstores.

In addition to his many varied interests, Liam also likes to hike, ski, and go to the beach. Although he thoroughly enjoys food - “I am a total sensualist” - he stays slim and trim.

Liam’s work is his joy, and his fervent wish is for everyone to “thrive in their creative groove.”
