UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
I have experienced unconditional love.
I awoke this morning at 5 something o'clock when my white bichonpoo, Lexi, jumped off the bed and a gagging stench assaulted my entire being. I turned on the bedside lamp and, looking down at Lexi, I saw two half dollar sized brown spots on the white rug and telltale brown goo smeared all over Lexi's hindquarters.
Holding Lexi at arm's length, I took her to the bathroom where there is an easily cleanable tile floor. "If you have to do anymore, do it in here. We'll go outside as soon as Momma puts on her coat, " I told her. It was then I noticed she was shaking. She so rarely does anything like this, I am sure that part of her agitation was embarrassment. I gently washed her off and gave her a big hug, telling her I would fix her up and everything would be OK. I left her in the bathroom while I cleaned up the brown spots on the bedroom rug. (I wanted that smell out of the bedroom pronto!)
I threw on yesterday's socks, a coat, a hat, and gloves and took Lexi outside, where it was still dark and very cold. With only my PJs on underneath the coat, now I was the one shaking.
Lexi peed and sniffed around a bit but nothing else. She looked at me like, "Why are we out here so early? It's dark and cold. Let's go back to bed."
Inside, I cleaned Lexi once more with her special doggie soap and I thought all was back to normal. That is until I reentered the bedroom to catch a few more winks. The smell was even stronger than before. I had cleaned it all up, hadn't I? I turned on the overhead light.
Let me say just this. Doggie diarrhea is not for the faint-hearted.
There was poop all over the bed! Lots of stinky, yucky, mushy poop. On the sheets. On the coverlet. On the blanket. On the comforter. On the pillow sham.
Eight trips to the bathroom. Flush. Flush.
Pull off all the bedding and dunk the brown parts into the toilet the way Mom used to do with dirty diapers in the "before disposable diapers" days. Drag all the bedding downstairs to the laundry room. Clean up where the comforter touched the door jams. Can the comforter be put into the washing machine? We have always taken it to the dry cleaners? Too smelly. In the washer it goes.
By the time the second of five loads was in the washer, Lexi was sleeping peacefully in the living room on my vintage faux fur coat. Should I retrieve the coat? Will she poop on it too? Lexi looks up at me. "See how cute I am? All clean and white?" She surely doesn't look like the silent and deadly pooping machine she really is.
I give Lexi a hug and tell her how much I love her.
Now, you tell ME that isn't unconditional love!
